Course description and goals
This course will provide a review of the most current national treatment guidelines
and recommendations for best practices in the care of medical and surgical adult
patients. Individuality of care must be applied to each practice environment.
Experts in medical and surgical patient care will instruct the course. This course
may be used for more in-depth knowledge of nursing care or in preparation for a
nursing certification exam.
Participants completing this course should be able to:
• Describe essential components of care for medical and surgical patients.
• Identify predisposing risk factors affecting surgical patients and those with
medical diseases.
• Review current pharmacologic and treatment strategies.
• Utilize research-based recommendations for care practices across the continuum.
Intended audience
This course is designed for nurses practicing in medical and surgical settings across the continuum of care.

The course will be held in Leighton Auditorium, Siebens Building, Mayo Clinic,
100 Second Avenue SW, Rochester, Minnesota. This site offers easy access by skyway and pedestrian subway to Mayo Clinic, shops, restaurants, and course hotels.
